How to Add a Filter to a Tableau Dashboard

Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a filter to a Tableau dashboard.
  1. Click the chart on your dashboard where you want to add a filter, then click the drop-down arrow at the top-right corner of the selected chart.
  2. From the dropdown menu, select 'Filter', then choose the field you want to apply from the next list.
  3. A filter box will appear in an empty space on your dashboard. Select the values you want to display in your chart.
  4. Your chart will update based on the filtered data you select.

📌 Why this matters

Adding filters to your dashboard transforms static charts into interactive exploration tools, letting viewers drill down into specific data segments without cluttering the interface with multiple versions of the same visualization. Beyond basic data slicing, filters create a shared analytical experience where stakeholders can answer their own questions in real-time during presentations or meetings. This self-service approach reduces the back-and-forth of requesting custom reports and builds confidence in data-driven decisions since users can verify insights by adjusting parameters themselves.
