Try this guided demo to learn how to add a reference line in Tableau.
  1. Go to the worksheet where your chart is displayed.
  2. Go to the 'Analytics' pane on the left side next to the Data pane, then locate the 'Reference Line' option.
  3. Drag the Reference Line onto your worksheet.
  4. An Edit Reference Line, Band, or Box dialog will appear, allowing you to modify your reference line. Click 'OK' to save your changes.
  5. A reference line will appear on your chart.
  6. Click on each data point to view its reference line.

📌 Why this matters

Reference lines transform raw data points into actionable insights by providing instant visual context for performance evaluation. You can immediately spot which values exceed targets, fall below benchmarks, or deviate from norms without mental calculations. Beyond basic comparisons, reference lines create a shared visual language for stakeholder presentations, eliminating confusion about what constitutes "good" or "concerning" performance. They also reveal patterns in variance that might otherwise go unnoticed, helping you identify consistent over-performers or systematic issues across different segments of your data.
