Use this interactive demo to learn how to set a start date on a Jira epic from the backlog.

Quick summary

Adding a start date to a Jira epic requires enabling the Epic Panel in backlog view settings and setting the date through the epic's detailed view. This six-step process gives project managers precise timeline control directly within the Jira backlog.

Steps

  1. On your Backlog page, go to View Settings and enable the Epic Panel.
  2. Click the small arrow to expand the Epic tile in the panel.
  3. Hit View all details to open the full epic detail view.
  4. The detailed view will open on the right — scroll down to find the date fields.
  5. Locate the Start Date row in the detail panel.
  6. Click the Start Date field and set your desired date.

📌 Why this matters

Setting a start date on a Jira epic gives project managers and scrum teams the ability to define precise timeline boundaries for large bodies of work, improving sprint planning accuracy and roadmap visibility. Without a start date, epics lack the scheduling context needed for capacity planning and dependency management. This feature is especially valuable for teams using Jira's backlog and epic panel to track long-running initiatives across multiple sprints. Properly dated epics ensure that stakeholders and delivery leads always have a clear, up-to-date picture of when planned work is set to begin.
