Use this interactive demo to learn how to annotate charts directly inside Amplitude's Chart Editor.

Quick summary

Amplitude's chart annotations let analysts mark key dates and events directly on analytics charts, making it easy to correlate data changes with real-world occurrences. Adding an annotation takes just a few clicks inside the Chart Editor and can be made visible across all charts with a single toggle.

Steps

  1. Open Amplitude's Chart Editor and tap the 'Add' icon at the bottom-right section of the chart preview.
  2. Fill in the annotation details: set the Affected Date, enter a unique Annotation Name, and write a short Description. Enable the Visibility toggle to apply the annotation across all charts.
  3. Tap 'Save' to confirm and create the annotation.
  4. The annotation will now appear on your Amplitude chart, marking the specified date and event.

📌 Why this matters

Chart annotations in Amplitude allow data and product teams to mark specific dates and events — such as feature launches, campaigns, or outages — directly on analytics charts, making it immediately clear why a metric changed. This eliminates guesswork when reviewing historical data, enabling faster and more accurate root-cause analysis. Teams can apply a single annotation across all charts with the Visibility toggle, ensuring organization-wide context without duplicating effort. For any team that relies on Amplitude for product analytics, chart annotations are a critical tool for turning raw trend data into actionable, context-rich insights.
