Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up automatic default watchers for Jira issues using automation rules.

Quick summary

Adding default watchers in Jira requires creating a global automation rule that automatically assigns specified users as watchers whenever an issue is created or updated. This approach uses Jira's built-in automation engine to ensure consistent issue visibility without any manual steps.

Steps

  1. Click the gear icon to access your profile settings.
  2. Under Jira Settings, select System.
  3. Under the Automation tab, go to Global automation.
  4. Go to the Rules tab.
  5. Click Create rule.
  6. Add and select the trigger for your rule.
  7. Under Add component, click Add action.
  8. Scroll and select Manage watchers.
  9. Click the drop-down arrow and add your watchers.
  10. Add a rule name and click Turn on rule.
  11. Your default watchers list has been successfully configured.

📌 Why this matters

Setting up default watchers in Jira ensures that the right team members are automatically notified whenever relevant issues are created or updated, eliminating the risk of missed updates. By leveraging Jira's global automation rules with the Manage Watchers action, teams can enforce consistent issue visibility across all projects without relying on manual intervention. This is especially valuable for project managers, team leads, and stakeholders who need real-time awareness of issue progress. Automating watcher assignment reduces administrative overhead and keeps cross-functional teams aligned throughout the entire issue lifecycle.
