Quick summary

Adding a Root Cause custom field in Jira lets teams capture and track the underlying reason behind each issue directly on the issue screen. This field is created through Jira's Custom Fields settings and can be associated with any screen in your project.

Steps

  1. Click the gear icon in the top right corner to open Jira settings.
  2. Select Issues from the settings drop-down menu.
  3. Under Fields, select Custom Fields.
  4. Click the Create Custom Field button.
  5. Choose the appropriate field type for the Root Cause field.
  6. Click Next to proceed.
  7. Enter the field name as 'Root Cause' and optionally add a description to explain the field's purpose.
  8. Click Create to save the new custom field.
  9. Add the Root Cause field to the relevant screens by checking the corresponding checkbox.
  10. Click Update to save your screen associations.
  11. The Root Cause field is now configured and ready to capture root cause information on your Jira issues.

📌 Why this matters

Adding a dedicated Root Cause field in Jira gives engineering and support teams a structured way to document why issues occur, making it easier to identify recurring problems and drive systemic fixes. By surfacing root cause data directly on the issue screen, teams can run more accurate post-mortems, improve sprint retrospectives, and reduce repeat incidents. This custom field integrates natively into existing Jira workflows, requiring no third-party tools, so adoption is immediate and friction-free. Organizations that track root causes systematically in their issue tracker are better positioned to reduce bug recurrence and improve overall software quality over time.
