Use this interactive demo to learn how to create sticky notes on your PowerPoint slides.

Quick summary

Adding sticky notes in PowerPoint is done by inserting a colored rectangle shape, filling it with a yellow or pastel color, and typing your note text directly into the shape. This method lets you place visual sticky note annotations anywhere on a slide without using the built-in notes panel.

Steps

  1. Go to the Insert tab in the PowerPoint ribbon.
  2. Click Shapes located in the Illustrations section of the ribbon.
  3. Select a Rectangle or Rounded Rectangle shape from the shapes panel.
  4. Draw the shape onto your slide to place it.
  5. Set the Shape Fill color to yellow or any sticky note color you prefer.
  6. Right-click the shape and select Edit Text to enable text entry inside it.
  7. Start typing your notes directly into the shape.

📌 Why this matters

Sticky notes in PowerPoint give presenters a fast, visual way to annotate slides with reminders, callouts, or collaborator feedback — all without leaving the presentation file. This technique works natively inside Microsoft PowerPoint using built-in Shapes tools, so no add-ins or third-party plugins are required. It is especially useful for teams reviewing slide decks, educators marking up lesson materials, or anyone who wants color-coded visual cues directly on a slide. Knowing how to add sticky notes in PowerPoint improves slide organization and makes review workflows faster and clearer.
