Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up UTM tracking parameters for your social media links in Buffer.

Quick summary

Buffer's UTM parameter feature lets you automatically append campaign tracking tags to every link in your social posts, giving you precise Google Analytics data on which channels and campaigns drive traffic.

Steps

  1. On Buffer's Publish tab, click the Channel Settings icon next to the name of your selected social media account.
  2. Tap the General tab to proceed into account settings.
  3. Find Enable Campaign Tracking under Google Analytics Campaign Tracking and switch on the toggle to activate it.
  4. Click Customize Campaign Tracking to open the UTM parameter editor.
  5. Enter your preferred Campaign Name, Campaign Source, and Campaign Medium into their respective input fields.
  6. Click Update Tracking to apply and save your changes.
  7. Your custom UTM parameters will now be added automatically to all links in your Buffer posts.

📌 Why this matters

Adding UTM parameters to Buffer links gives marketers accurate, channel-level attribution data in Google Analytics without manually tagging every URL. Buffer's built-in campaign tracking automation ensures every scheduled social post carries consistent utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign tags, eliminating human error. This makes it significantly easier to measure the ROI of social media campaigns, compare channel performance, and make data-driven decisions about content strategy. For teams managing multiple social accounts, centralizing UTM configuration inside Buffer saves hours of manual work each month.
