How to Aggregate Data in Tableau

Walk through this interactive demo to learn how to aggregate your data in Tableau.
  1. Drag a field from the Data pane to the 'Rows' shelf to display it as a measure.
  2. Place another field on the 'Columns' shelf to introduce a dimension.
  3. Right-click the field, click ‘Measure,’ and select an aggregation. Aggregation in Tableau summarizes data using functions like Sum or Average.
  4. Select ‘Average’ to aggregate the measure values as an average.
  5. The table will automatically display the average values.
  6. You can choose different aggregation options depending on how you want to summarize the data.

📌 Why this matters

Data aggregation transforms overwhelming datasets into actionable insights by condensing thousands of individual records into meaningful patterns. You can spot trends, identify outliers, and make comparisons that would be impossible when looking at raw data points. The real power emerges when you switch between different aggregation types on the same data—viewing total sales versus average order value reveals completely different business stories. This flexibility lets you ask multiple questions of your data without rebuilding analyses from scratch.
