Try this guided demo to learn how to calculate average in Tableau.
  1. Go to the top menu, select ‘Analysis,’ then click ‘Create Calculated Field.’
  2. Enter AVG([your field]) in the formula box. Then click 'OK'. In this tutorial, we will calculate the average sales. Formula: AVG(SALES)
  3. Change the field name to ‘Average Sales.’
  4. Your aggregate data will appear in the Data pane.
  5. You can drag your aggregate data to the Rows or Columns shelf along with your other fields to view the Average data.

📌 Why this matters

Calculating averages through custom fields gives you flexibility that built-in summary statistics can't match. You can create contextual averages that adapt to your specific filter selections and dimensional breakdowns, rather than being locked into static values. This becomes particularly powerful when building dashboards where users need to see how individual records compare to relevant peer groups. Your average calculations automatically recalculate as viewers interact with filters, providing dynamic benchmarks that reveal performance patterns across different segments of your data.
