Use this interactive demo to learn how to measure your YouTube video engagement rate step by step.

Quick summary

Your YouTube engagement rate is calculated by adding likes and comments, dividing by total views, and multiplying by 100 — all data points found inside YouTube Studio Analytics. Tracking this metric across videos helps you identify which content resonates most and refine your content strategy.

Steps

  1. Go to studio.youtube.com and click Content in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the analytics icon (bar chart) next to the video you want to calculate engagement for.
  3. On the Overview tab, note the total Views figure for your chosen date range.
  4. Go to the Engagement tab and click Advanced mode in the top-right corner.
  5. Note the total likes and comment count shown on the page.
  6. Apply the engagement rate formula: add likes and comments together, divide by total views, then multiply by 100.
  7. Track this figure over time across multiple videos to identify which content consistently drives higher engagement and use that to inform your content strategy.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing your YouTube engagement rate is essential for any creator or marketer who wants to understand how effectively their content drives audience interaction beyond passive views. The engagement rate — calculated from likes, comments, and views inside YouTube Studio — is a direct signal of content quality and audience connection. Channels that regularly monitor and benchmark this metric can make data-driven decisions about topics, formats, and posting frequency. This demo shows exactly where to find the right data in YouTube Studio Analytics and how to apply the formula, removing all guesswork from the process.
