Use this interactive demo to learn how to edit and update an active sprint directly in Jira.

Quick summary

Changing an active sprint in Jira lets you update the sprint name, start date, and end date without disrupting ongoing work. You can edit a running sprint in just a few clicks using the Edit Sprint option from the Backlog view.

Steps

  1. Navigate to your desired Jira project.
  2. Go to the Backlog view in your Jira project.
  3. Click the ellipsis icon at the top-right of the active sprint board.
  4. Select Edit Sprint from the dropdown menu.
  5. Update the sprint name of your ongoing sprint as needed.
  6. Change the start date and end date of the ongoing sprint.
  7. Click Update to save your changes.

📌 Why this matters

Being able to change an active sprint in Jira gives agile teams the flexibility to adjust sprint details — including the sprint name, start date, and end date — without ending or restarting the sprint. This is critical when project timelines shift or a sprint was set up with incorrect information. Jira's Edit Sprint feature ensures teams can keep their boards accurate and aligned with real delivery schedules. Maintaining up-to-date sprint data improves sprint reporting, retrospective accuracy, and overall agile project management visibility.
