Use this interactive demo to learn how to update the tracked location in Semrush Position Tracking.

Quick summary

Semrush Position Tracking lets you monitor keyword rankings by specific country, state, or city. Changing the tracked location lets SEOs align rank data with their target audience's geography in just a few clicks.

Steps

  1. Go to the Position Tracking tool in Semrush.
  2. Select an existing project from the list, or create a new one by entering your domain.
  3. Once inside the project, click the Settings icon in the upper right corner.
  4. Select "Tracking your domain" to open the project's tracking configuration.
  5. Find the Location settings and choose a different country, state, or city based on your tracking needs.
  6. After selecting the new location, click "Save changes" to confirm your update.
  7. Click "Change target and clear history" to apply the new location settings and reset your tracking data.

📌 Why this matters

Accurate local SEO depends on tracking keyword rankings in the right geographic market. Semrush Position Tracking allows users to change the target location — down to city level — so SEO teams can measure real visibility where their audience actually searches. This flexibility is critical for agencies managing multi-region clients, businesses expanding into new markets, or anyone who needs geo-specific rank data to make informed content and link-building decisions. Updating the tracked location in Semrush ensures your ranking reports reflect the competitive landscape that actually matters to your business.
