Use this interactive demo to learn how to check character count in Google Slides.
  1. Click the File menu at the top-left corner of the screen, select Download, then choose Plain text as the file format.
  2. Wait for the presentation to finish downloading, then double-click the downloaded file to open it on notepad.
  3. On Notepad, press Ctrl + A to highlight all the extracted text from your presentation, then press Ctrl + C to copy it.
  4. Open Google Docs in your browser and create a new document. On the blank page, press Ctrl + V to paste the copied content.
  5. On the menu above, click Tools, then select Word count, or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + C.
  6. Your word count for the extracted text from your presentation will be displayed.

📌 Why this matters

Tracking character count helps you stay within platform limits when repurposing presentation content for social media posts, email campaigns, or advertising copy. You can also ensure consistent messaging across different formats and identify overly wordy slides that might overwhelm your audience. Since presentations often become the foundation for multiple content pieces, having precise character data lets you strategically edit and adapt your message for maximum impact across channels without starting from scratch each time.
