Use this interactive demo to learn how to connect your MCP server to GitHub Copilot.

‍

‍

You can connect the official GitHub MCP server via the extensions panel. Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. Open your VS code and go to the gear icon to access the extensions view.
  2. In the search bar, click the filter icon.
  3. After clicking the filter icon, select the 'MCP servers'.
  4. Go to the search bar and type @mcp GitHub'.
  5. From the results, select 'GitHub'.
  6. Click 'Install' on the configuration page.
  7. To finalize the connection, click 'Allow'.

📌 Why this matters

Connecting the GitHub MCP server to Copilot transforms your coding assistant from a general-purpose tool into one that understands your specific repositories, coding patterns, and project context. This integration allows Copilot to provide suggestions that align with your existing codebase conventions and project requirements.

The real advantage emerges when working on complex, multi-file projects where context matters—Copilot can now reference your actual repository structure, recent commits, and team coding standards to generate more accurate and relevant code completions.
