Steps

  1. Open your desired repository and click on the Tag section.
  2. Click on the Tag button to expand the tag options.
  3. Select View all tags to see existing tags in the repository.
  4. Select Releases from the repository navigation.
  5. Click on the Draft a new release button to begin creating a release.
  6. Select Choose a tag from the tag dropdown menu.
  7. Type a name in the empty field and click +Create new tag to save the new tag.
  8. You have successfully created a tag in GitHub.

📌 Why this matters

GitHub tags are essential for marking stable release points in a repository, making it easy for teams to track versions and roll back changes when needed. Creating a tag through the Releases workflow ensures your codebase milestones are clearly documented and accessible to all collaborators. This feature is critical for any development team practicing version control, continuous integration, or semantic versioning. Knowing how to create and manage GitHub tags streamlines the release process and improves project transparency across the entire team.
