Try this guided demo to learn how to create a YouTube thumbnail.
  1. Open a design tool such as Canva, Adobe Express, or a built-in design tool, then create a new canvas set to 1280 × 720 pixels. Most tools offer a YouTube thumbnail preset at this size.
  2. Add a background image or color, a short title or key phrase in large, readable text, and a relevant image or visual that represents the video content.
  3. Export the finished thumbnail as a PNG file under 2MB.
  4. Go to studio.youtube.com and click Content in the left sidebar.
  5. Click the title or thumbnail of the video you want to update to open its details page.
  6. Click the Upload file in the Thumbnail section and select your file
  7. Review the preview to confirm it looks correct.
  8. Click the X icon in the top-right corner to Save[a][b] and Close. Your thumbnail will be saved and applied automatically.

📌 Why this matters

Why this matters

Uploading a custom thumbnail gives your video a consistent, intentional appearance in search results and suggested feeds rather than a random auto-generated frame. Even a simple thumbnail with a clear title and clean background outperforms most auto-generated options because it immediately communicates what the video is about. For anyone publishing YouTube content regularly, developing a repeatable thumbnail creation process keeps production efficient and your video library looking cohesive.
