Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up automated rules inside your Jira project.

Quick summary

Jira automation rules let teams define triggers, conditions, and actions that automatically execute repetitive project tasks. Setting up an automation rule in Jira reduces manual work and keeps software project workflows running consistently without human intervention.

Steps

  1. Open your desired project and go to Project settings.
  2. Select Automation from the project settings menu.
  3. On the Automation page, click Create Rule.
  4. Select the Trigger that will start the rule.
  5. Click Next to proceed to the conditions and actions setup.
  6. Click the Add an action button — you can also set conditions to narrow down when the rule should run.
  7. Choose the Action you want the rule to perform when the conditions are met.
  8. Name your rule, then click Turn on rule to activate it and confirm everything works as expected.
  9. Your automation rules are now active and will help streamline workflows and reduce manual tasks in your Jira projects.

📌 Why this matters

Jira automation rules eliminate repetitive manual work by automatically triggering actions — such as status updates, assignments, or notifications — whenever specific project events occur. Teams that use Jira automation reduce human error, accelerate sprint workflows, and free up engineering and project management time for higher-value work. For software teams managing large backlogs or complex release cycles, automation rules are a critical productivity lever built directly into the Jira platform. Understanding how to create and configure these rules gives teams immediate control over how their projects move forward without constant manual intervention.
