Try this interactive demo to learn how to create bins in Tableau.
  1. Right-click the 'measure (#) field' in the Data pane and choose 'Create', then click 'Bins'.
  2. An Edit Bins dialog box will appear. You can rename the field and set the bin size here, then click 'OK' to save your changes.
  3. The new aggregated field will now be available in the Data pane.
  4. Drag the aggregated field to the Rows or Columns shelves, and your chart will display the bins.

📌 Why this matters

Creating bins transforms raw numerical data into meaningful intervals that reveal patterns invisible in scatter plots or tables. You can instantly spot data distribution, identify outliers, and build histograms that communicate insights to stakeholders. Beyond basic analysis, bins let you standardize different datasets for comparison—like grouping sales figures from various regions into consistent ranges. This becomes particularly powerful when your data spans wide ranges or contains many unique values that would otherwise create cluttered, unreadable visualizations.
