Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a custom measure using DAX in Power BI.

Quick summary

A custom measure in Power BI lets you define reusable DAX calculations that appear in the Data pane and can be applied across any visual. This step-by-step walkthrough shows exactly how to create and commit a new measure from the Table view in Power BI Desktop.

Steps

  1. Open your dataset and click on the Table view to get started.
  2. Select New Measure from the toolbar to open the formula bar.
  3. Write your DAX formula (Data Analysis Expressions) in the empty input field.
  4. Click the check icon to apply and commit your DAX expression.
  5. Press Enter to finalize — your custom measure is now ready.
  6. Confirm the measure appears in the Data pane with a calculator icon next to it.

📌 Why this matters

Custom measures in Power BI enable analysts to define precise, reusable DAX calculations that go beyond default aggregations — giving teams full control over metrics like revenue growth, conversion rates, or weighted averages. Unlike calculated columns, measures are computed on the fly based on filter context, making reports faster and more flexible. Mastering custom measures is a foundational Power BI skill that unlocks advanced data modeling and more accurate business intelligence dashboards.
