Use this interactive demo to learn how to build Harvey Balls step by step in PowerPoint.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to create Harvey Balls in PowerPoint using native shapes — no add-ins required. You combine an Oval shape and a Pie shape to simulate the classic filled-circle progress indicator.

Steps

  1. Go to the Insert tab in PowerPoint.
  2. Click Shapes located in the Illustrations tab.
  3. Choose the Oval shape from the shapes panel.
  4. Hold Shift and draw a perfect circle on your slide.
  5. Fill the circle with black, gray, or any color using Shape Fill.
  6. Insert a Pie shape from the shapes menu.
  7. Resize the Pie shape to match the size of your circle.
  8. Adjust the pie by dragging the two yellow circles to set the fill amount.

📌 Why this matters

Harvey Balls are a widely used visual tool in business presentations and scorecards to show partial completion or status at a glance. PowerPoint does not include a built-in Harvey Ball shape, so knowing how to build one from native Oval and Pie shapes saves time and eliminates the need for third-party add-ins. This technique gives presenters full control over size, color, and fill percentage, making slides more professional and data-driven. Mastering this skill improves the clarity and visual impact of any status report, roadmap, or competitive analysis slide.
