Use this interactive demo to learn how to remove a file attachment from a SharePoint list item.

Quick summary

Deleting a file attachment from a SharePoint list requires opening the list item in edit mode and using the Remove Attachment option before saving. This step-by-step process ensures attachments are permanently removed without affecting the rest of the list record.

Steps

  1. From the main dashboard of your SharePoint site, go to the left-side panel and click the list that contains the file attachment you wish to delete.
  2. Find and click the specific list item you wish to edit.
  3. Click Edit All to open the item in full edit mode.
  4. Under the Attachments section, locate the file you want to remove and click the Remove Attachment icon.
  5. Click Delete to confirm the removal of the attachment.
  6. Click Save to apply your changes to the list item.
  7. The selected file attachment is now permanently deleted from your SharePoint list.

📌 Why this matters

Managing file attachments in SharePoint Lists is a routine but essential task for keeping collaborative workspaces clean and organized. Knowing how to correctly delete attachments prevents outdated or incorrect files from cluttering list records, reducing confusion for team members. SharePoint's built-in attachment management ensures that removals are deliberate and reversible only before saving, protecting data integrity. This process is especially valuable for teams using SharePoint as a document and task management hub who need precise control over record-level file attachments.
