Use this interactive demo to learn how to permanently remove a subtask from your Jira project board.

Quick summary

Deleting a subtask in Jira requires Administrator permissions on the project — if the Delete option is missing, you must first grant yourself the correct role via Project Settings. Once the role is assigned, you can remove any subtask directly from the board using the three dot menu.

Steps

  1. If you don't see a Delete option for your subtasks, open the Gear icon in the top right and select Projects.
  2. Click the three dot menu next to your project and select Project Settings.
  3. Navigate to People in the left sidebar.
  4. Click Add people in the top-right corner.
  5. Add the relevant user and assign the Administrator role.
  6. Confirm the change — you will see a "New people added" confirmation prompt.
  7. Return to the board and click the three dot menu on the subtask you want to delete.
  8. You will now find the Delete option enabled in the menu.
  9. Click Delete again to confirm and permanently remove the subtask.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to delete a subtask in Jira is essential for keeping project boards clean and accurate, especially when tasks are created in error or become obsolete. The Delete option in Jira is permission-gated, meaning only users with the Administrator role can remove subtasks — a detail that trips up many teams. This demo shows exactly how to grant the right permissions and complete the deletion in just a few steps, saving time spent searching through Jira's settings. For teams managing complex projects with many nested tasks, this workflow ensures boards stay organized and reflect only active, relevant work.
