Use this interactive demo to learn how to permanently remove an epic from your Jira backlog.

Quick summary

To delete an epic in Jira, you access the Epic panel from the Backlog, open the epic's details, and use the three-dot menu to select Delete and confirm the action.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the Backlog using the left sidebar.
  2. Open the Epic dropdown and enable the Show epic panel toggle.
  3. Click the right arrow next to the epic to expand its details.
  4. Hit the View all details button to open the full epic view.
  5. In the Epic Details panel on the right, click the three dots menu.
  6. Select Delete from the dropdown menu.
  7. Click Delete again on the confirmation prompt to permanently remove the epic.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to delete an epic in Jira helps agile teams keep their backlog clean and free of outdated or redundant work items. Epics that are no longer relevant can clutter sprint planning and distort project reporting, making it harder for teams to prioritize effectively. The ability to permanently remove an epic directly from the Backlog's epic panel gives project managers and Scrum leads precise control over their Jira project structure. This is an essential workflow for any team maintaining a well-organized and accurate Jira Software board.
