How to Increase Maximum Upload File Size in Wordpress

Use this interactive demo to learn how to raise the maximum upload file size limit in WordPress.

Quick summary

WordPress enforces a default maximum upload file size that can block large media uploads. You can increase this limit without touching server config files by installing the Big File Uploads plugin directly from the WordPress dashboard.

Steps

  1. In your WordPress account, navigate the left-side toolbar and select Media.
  2. Confirm you have hit the maximum file upload limit — this is the error that needs to be resolved.
  3. Go to Plugins and select Install Plugins.
  4. Under Plugins, click the Add New button.
  5. Search for Big File Uploads, select Activate, and proceed to install the plugin.
  6. Return to Media and click Add New to access the upload screen.
  7. Locate the Maximum upload file option and click Change.
  8. Enter your desired file size and click Save to apply the new limit.
  9. Navigate back to Media and click Add New to confirm the updated limit is active.
  10. Your WordPress site can now upload larger files — the new maximum upload size is fully set.

📌 Why this matters

WordPress's default maximum upload file size is often far too small for teams working with high-resolution images, videos, or large documents, causing frustrating upload errors. Increasing the maximum upload file size in WordPress — without requiring server-level access — is a critical capability for content creators, developers, and site administrators who need reliable media management. The Big File Uploads plugin provides a no-code solution that lets any WordPress user raise the upload limit directly from the dashboard in minutes. This removes a common bottleneck that slows down content production and forces costly workarounds like external file hosting or FTP uploads.
