Use this interactive demo to learn how to control image stacking order in PowerPoint.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to layer images in PowerPoint by inserting multiple pictures and using Bring Forward, Bring to Front, and Send to Back controls to arrange them in the correct stacking order. Mastering image layering in PowerPoint lets you build visually polished slides where every element appears exactly where you intend it.

Steps

  1. Go to the Insert tab in PowerPoint to begin adding images to your slide.
  2. Click Pictures and choose This Device, Stock Images, or Search on Web to insert multiple images onto the slide.
  3. Click the image you want to move to select it.
  4. Go to the Picture tab that appears in the ribbon after selecting an image.
  5. Click Bring Forward or Bring to Front to move the selected image higher in the layer stack.
  6. Choose Send to Back to push the selected image behind all other elements for clean, uncluttered slides.
  7. Repeat the select-and-reorder steps until all images are arranged in the correct stacking order.

📌 Why this matters

Layering images in PowerPoint is a fundamental design skill that lets presenters create depth, overlap graphics, and build visually compelling slides without third-party tools. Using built-in controls like Bring Forward and Send to Back, anyone can precisely manage the z-order of multiple images directly inside Microsoft PowerPoint. This capability is especially valuable for marketers, educators, and business professionals who need polished, publication-ready presentations fast. Mastering image layering in PowerPoint eliminates the guesswork and saves significant design time.
