How to Message a New Connection on LinkedIn

Use this step-by-step demo to learn how to message a new connection on LinkedIn.
  1. To message a new connection on LinkedIn, go to the profile of the person you want to connect with and click the three-dot (…) icon.
  2. Choose and select Connect.
  3. Choose Connect with a note to add your first personalized message to your connection request.
  4. Type your message and click the message button once done.

📌 Why this matters

Messaging new connections lets you start meaningful professional conversations while the initial interaction is still fresh. The real advantage comes from timing - people are most receptive to deeper engagement immediately after connecting, when your profile and mutual interests are top of mind. A thoughtful first message transforms a passive connection into an active relationship, opening doors to collaborations, referrals, and opportunities that would otherwise remain dormant in your network. Most connections never progress beyond the initial link without this crucial follow-up step.
