Quick summary

Moving files in SharePoint lets users reorganize documents across site libraries without deleting or re-uploading them. The built-in Move To feature transfers files to any destination folder in just a few clicks.

Steps

  1. Go to the left-side panel and click the site library that contains the files you want to move.
  2. Hover your mouse over the file you want to move, then click the More Actions button.
  3. Choose Move To from the list of options.
  4. Find and select your preferred file destination.
  5. Tap Move Here to confirm and proceed with the move.
  6. The selected file will be successfully moved to a new location in SharePoint.

📌 Why this matters

Moving files in SharePoint is an essential document management skill for any organization using Microsoft 365. The native Move To feature allows users to reorganize files across site libraries without losing version history or sharing permissions, keeping content structured and accessible. For teams managing large volumes of documents, knowing how to move files efficiently reduces clutter, improves collaboration, and ensures the right content lives in the right place. This capability is especially valuable for educational institutions and businesses that rely on SharePoint as their primary document management platform.
