Use this interactive demo to learn how to add merge tags and personalize emails in SendGrid's Design Editor.

Quick summary

SendGrid's Design Editor lets you insert merge tags like {{first_name}} and {{email}} to automatically personalize each outgoing email with recipient-specific data. This free personalization feature helps marketers boost engagement by replacing static greetings with dynamic, recipient-specific content at send time.

Steps

  1. Open the Design Editor in SendGrid and navigate to the Tags tab in the left-side panel.
  2. Find the merge tag you want to use — such as {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}, or {{email}} — and click the Copy button next to it.
  3. Go to the preview area and select the text module you want to edit.
  4. Paste the merge tag into the content at the desired location, such as next to an email greeting for first-name personalization.
  5. Click outside the selected module, then repeat the steps for each additional custom value you want to insert into your email.
  6. Click Save to apply and finalize all personalization changes.

📌 Why this matters

Email personalization using merge tags in SendGrid's Design Editor allows marketers to dynamically insert recipient-specific details — such as first name, last name, and email address — into every message at no extra cost. Personalized emails consistently outperform generic campaigns in open rates and click-through rates, making this capability essential for any email marketing strategy. SendGrid's built-in merge tag library makes it straightforward to scale one-to-one personalization across thousands of recipients without writing custom code or upgrading to a paid plan.
