Use this interactive demo to learn how to disable automatic date hierarchy in Power BI Desktop.

Quick summary

To remove date hierarchy in Power BI, navigate to File > Options and Settings > Options, then uncheck Auto Date/Time under the Current File Data Load settings. This disables the automatic date hierarchy so your date fields display without the default Year, Quarter, Month, Day grouping.

Steps

  1. Open Power BI Desktop and select the report you want to modify.
  2. Navigate to the File tab in the top menu bar.
  3. Click Options and Settings from the File menu.
  4. Under Options and Settings, select Options.
  5. In the Options dialog, go to the Current File section and select Data Load.
  6. Scroll to the Time Intelligence section and uncheck the Auto Date/Time for new files checkbox.
  7. Click OK to confirm and apply the changes.
  8. The date hierarchy has been successfully removed from your Power BI report.

📌 Why this matters

Removing the automatic date hierarchy in Power BI gives data analysts and report developers full control over how date fields are structured and displayed in their data models. By disabling the Auto Date/Time setting, users eliminate unwanted Year, Quarter, Month, and Day groupings that can clutter the Fields pane and slow down report performance. This is especially valuable when working with custom date tables or complex time intelligence calculations that require a clean, manual date setup. Understanding how to remove date hierarchy in Power BI is an essential skill for anyone building professional, optimized Power BI reports.
