Use this interactive demo to learn how to upload large files to GitHub via Releases.

Quick summary

GitHub does not support direct large file uploads through standard commits, but you can upload files up to 100 MB per file by attaching them to a GitHub Release. This method uses the Releases section of your repository to host and distribute large binary assets alongside your tagged versions.

Steps

  1. Navigate to your repository on GitHub.
  2. Click Tags in the repository navigation.
  3. Go to the Releases section of your repository.
  4. Select Draft a new release to begin creating a release.
  5. Choose a tag to associate with the release.
  6. Add a release title and a description for the release.
  7. Click to add files and attach your large files to the release.
  8. Click the Publish release button to upload your files directly.
  9. Note: GitHub allows up to 100 MB per file, with a typical repository size limit of around 1 GB.

📌 Why this matters

Uploading large files directly to a GitHub repository via standard commits is restricted by strict size limits, making it difficult for developers to distribute binaries, datasets, or compiled assets. GitHub Releases provide a built-in solution that allows teams to attach files up to 100 MB per file directly to versioned releases, keeping the repository lightweight while making large assets easily downloadable. This approach is essential for open-source maintainers and development teams who need to ship compiled executables, archives, or large media files alongside their tagged software versions. Understanding how to use GitHub Releases for large file uploads streamlines the software distribution workflow without requiring third-party storage solutions.
