‍

‍

To use GitHub Copilot Chat, you need an active Copilot subscription. Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. On GitHub website, click the Copilot icon at the top right of any page.
  2. Ask Copilot anything about your code, from explaining functions to suggesting optimizations.
  3. Select the 'Ask' option.
  4. Copilot analyzes your workspace context and provides relevant, actionable answers instantly.
  5. Select your preferred repository.
  6. Select your preferred AI from the power lists.
  7. Review suggestions carefully. Copilot is smart, but you're the expert on your codebase.
  8. Copilot can generate unit tests, refactor code, or even write documentation based on your request.
  9. Keep conversations going. The copilot remembers the context, so follow-up questions work smoothly.
  10. You may click the ellipsis icon and click 'Download files' to save your program.
  11. Access your chat history anytime to revisit previous solutions or continue where you left off.
  12. The more specific your question, the better the answer. Context is everything.

📌 Why this matters

GitHub Copilot Chat transforms your development workflow by giving you an AI pair programmer that understands your specific codebase context. Beyond just answering coding questions, it maintains conversation history and workspace awareness, meaning you can build complex solutions through iterative dialogue rather than starting from scratch each time.

This conversational approach mirrors how you'd naturally collaborate with a human teammate, making it particularly powerful for debugging, refactoring, and exploring architectural decisions where multiple rounds of discussion lead to better outcomes.
