How to Use GitHub Copilot Edits in VS Code

Interact with this demo to learn how to use GitHub Copilot edits within Visual Studio Code.

‍

‍

Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. Open the Copilot Chat view and in the chat input field, click the "Create new Edit session" button.
  2. Choose a simple prompt.
  3. You can also reference files using the #file command in your prompt.
  4. If the initial changes aren't exactly right, you can enter a follow-up prompt in the same session to refine them.
  5. You can select "Accept all". Copilot Edits is best for making quick, specific updates across a defined set of files with granular review control.

📌 Why this matters

You can make precise code changes across multiple files without losing track of what's being modified or accidentally accepting unwanted alterations. The real power lies in the iterative refinement process - you can adjust and perfect changes through follow-up prompts before committing to anything.

This creates a collaborative editing workflow where you maintain full control over each modification, making it invaluable for complex refactoring tasks or implementing features that span several files while keeping your codebase clean and intentional.
