To use GitHub Copilot Chat effectively, focus on providing specific, contextual prompts and treating the AI as a collaborative assistant whose outputs you must review and validate. Here’s how to do it:
- On GitHub.com you can go to your repository.
- Type anything on your file.
- Click 'Commit changes'.
- Copilot acts as your automatic assistant who generates ideas for you.
- Click the recycle button when you are not satisfied of the changes.
- Once satisfied, click ' Propose changes'.
- Then, you can also go to Visual Studio Code and start by opening the Copilot Chat view. In the chat input field, click "Create new Edit session" to begin.
- Select your desired prompt so you can start your edit session.
- Use #file in your prompt to reference them directly.
- Use iteration to fine-tune the changes.
- Hit "Accept all" to apply them. Copilot Edits gives you quick, targeted updates with full control over what gets changed.
