Use this interactive demo to learn how to write effective prompts for GitHub Copilot.

‍

‍

To write effective prompts for GitHub Copilot, follow these steps:

‍

  1. On GitHub.com you can go to your repository.
  2. Type anything on your file.
  3. Click 'Commit changes'.
  4. Copilot acts as your automatic assistant who generates ideas for you.
  5. Click the recycle button when you are not satisfied with the changes.
  6. Once satisfied, click ' Propose changes'.
  7. Then, you can also go to Visual Studio Code and start by opening the Copilot Chat view. In the chat input field, click "Create new Edit session" to begin.
  8. Select your desired prompt so you can start your edit session.
  9. Use #file in your prompt to reference them directly.
  10. Hit ‘Accept all’ to apply them. Copilot Edits gives you quick, targeted updates with full control over what gets changed.

📌 Why this matters

Well-crafted prompts transform GitHub Copilot from a basic autocomplete tool into a precise coding partner that understands your specific context and intent. You gain the ability to generate targeted code suggestions, refactor existing functions, and even architect entire features through conversational instructions.

The real power lies in prompt iteration—when you reference specific files and provide clear context, Copilot learns your codebase patterns and coding style, making its suggestions increasingly aligned with your project's architecture and conventions rather than generic boilerplate code.
