Use this interactive demo to learn how to create matrix sub-questions in your SurveyMonkey survey.

Quick summary

Adding sub-questions in SurveyMonkey is done using the Matrix/Rating Scale question type, which lets you group multiple related questions under a single header. Each row in the matrix acts as an independent sub-question, allowing respondents to rate or answer across shared column options in one compact format.

Steps

  1. Open your survey by clicking the ellipsis icon next to the survey title.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Edit survey.
  3. In the Design Survey view, select a question and click Edit.
  4. From the question types, choose Matrix/Rating Scale — this type allows multiple sub-question rows under a common header.
  5. Write your main question or the header text for the matrix.
  6. Under the Rows section, enter each sub-question or item you want to ask about.
  7. In the Columns section, define the possible responses respondents can select.
  8. Customize the Options such as using weights, allowing multiple answers per row, or forcing a response.
  9. Click SAVE to apply your changes.
  10. Click Preview survey to review how your sub-questions appear to respondents.
  11. Confirm your layout is organized correctly to gather richer insights from your audience.

📌 Why this matters

Adding sub-questions in SurveyMonkey using the Matrix/Rating Scale question type lets researchers and businesses collect structured, comparative feedback across multiple items in a single, compact question block. This approach reduces survey length while increasing the depth of data collected, making it easier to analyze patterns across related topics. Teams that need to measure satisfaction, agreement, or frequency across several attributes benefit directly from this format, as it keeps respondents engaged and reduces drop-off rates. Mastering sub-questions in SurveyMonkey is essential for anyone building professional-grade surveys that deliver actionable, high-quality insights.
