Use this interactive demo to learn how to create a custom gradient swatch in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to create a gradient swatch in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To create a gradient swatch in Adobe InDesign, open the Swatches panel through the 'Window' → 'Color' → 'Swatches.'
  2. Go to the top-right corner of the Swatches panel and click the Hamburger icon to access more swatch options.
  3. Select 'New Gradient Swatch.'
  4. A new dialog box will open, configure the gradient settings, such as the type and colors, which can be adjusted by clicking the gradient stops on the Gradient Ramp.
  5. Once you’re done, click 'OK' to create the new gradient swatch, which will then be added to the Swatches panel.
  6. The new gradient swatch is now created, added to the Swatches panel, and ready to be used in Adobe InDesign.

📌 Why this matters

Creating gradient swatches transforms how you work with complex color transitions across your entire project. Instead of rebuilding gradients repeatedly for different elements, you establish consistent branded color schemes that automatically sync across text, shapes, and backgrounds.

This becomes invaluable when client feedback requires color adjustments—modify the swatch once and watch every instance update simultaneously. You also gain the ability to export these gradients to other documents, ensuring brand consistency across campaigns while dramatically reducing repetitive design work.
