Use this interactive demo to learn how to create a custom template in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a quick and simple guide to creating a template in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To create template in Adobe InDesign, use the Pages panel to set up Master Pages (also called Parent Pages) for recurring elements such as headers, footers, and page numbers.
  2. Use Paragraph Styles to apply consistent formatting to entire paragraphs, including alignment, spacing, indents, and other paragraph attributes.
  3. Use Character Styles to apply consistent text formatting, such as font, size, color, and other text attributes, across your document
  4. Use placeholder frames for images and text by going to 'Type' → 'Placeholder Text.'
  5. Now save your file by going to 'File' → 'Save As,' and choose InDesign Template (.indt) to prevent overwriting your original document.

📌 Why this matters

Creating templates transforms repetitive design work into a one-time setup effort. You'll produce consistent documents faster while eliminating the tedious recreation of layouts, styles, and formatting decisions.

Templates also act as guardrails for brand consistency across teams—when multiple people use the same template, your organization's visual standards stay intact without constant oversight. Perhaps most valuable is how templates preserve your design decisions over time, preventing the gradual drift that happens when recreating "similar" documents from scratch.
