Use this interactive demo to learn how to link and manage issue dependencies in Linear.

Quick summary

Issue relations in Linear let you define whether one task is blocking, blocked by, or related to another, giving teams clear visibility into cross-issue dependencies. Use the ellipsis menu or the issue sidebar to create and manage these relationships directly from any issue view.

Steps

  1. Open the issue you want to link to another issue in Linear.
  2. Click the ellipsis icon in the top-right corner of the open issue.
  3. Choose the relationship type — blocking, blocked by, or related — based on the dependency between tasks.
  4. Enter the title of the issue you want to link and click Create issue.
  5. Navigate to the sidebar of the issue and locate the Related option to view or manage all linked issue relations.

📌 Why this matters

Issue relations in Linear are essential for engineering and product teams that need to track dependencies across multiple tasks without losing context. By marking issues as blocking, blocked by, or related, teams can immediately see what work is being held up and by what, reducing missed handoffs and sprint delays. This feature gives project managers and developers a clear dependency map directly inside their existing Linear workflow, eliminating the need for separate documentation. For fast-moving teams, structured issue relations mean fewer surprises at standup and faster, more confident sprint planning.
