How to Create Personal To-Do Lists in Linear

Use this interactive demo to learn how to build personal to-do lists using Linear's Drafts feature.

Quick summary

Linear's Drafts feature lets you create issues without assigning them to a team or cycle, making it ideal for managing personal to-do lists. Once you're ready to act, simply open the draft, add details, and convert it into a live issue.

Steps

  1. Start by creating an issue without assigning it to a team or cycle — save it as a Draft to use it as a personal to-do item until you're ready to take action.
  2. Click 'Save as draft' to store the issue in your Drafts queue.
  3. Navigate to 'Drafts' in your Linear sidebar to view all your saved draft issues.
  4. Click on a draft when you're ready to begin working on that issue.
  5. Add the important details to the issue, such as description, priority, or assignee.
  6. Click 'Create issue' to publish the draft as an active issue in your workflow.

📌 Why this matters

Linear's personal to-do list workflow using Drafts gives individual contributors a flexible way to capture tasks without cluttering team backlogs or active cycles. By saving issues as drafts, users can privately track personal action items and promote them to real issues only when they're ready to be worked on. This is especially valuable for engineers and project managers who need a lightweight, friction-free way to manage their own workload alongside team projects. Linear's draft-to-issue flow keeps personal productivity organized within the same tool teams already use for sprint planning and issue tracking.
