Use this interactive demo to learn how to create sections in your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a quick and simple guide on creating sections in Adobe InDesign to manage page numbering or chapter breaks:

‍

  1. To create sections in Adobe InDesign, open the Pages panel by navigating to 'Window' → 'Pages.'
  2. Once the panel opens, go to the upper-right corner and click the 'Hamburger' icon to access more page settings.
  3. Select 'Numbering & Section Options' from the list of available options.
  4. From the Numbering & Section Options window, enable 'Start Section' and customize the Start Page Number.
  5. Customize any additional settings in the window according to your preference, then click 'OK' to apply the section.
  6. Notice that a section marker has been created and the changes are reflected in the Pages panel.

📌 Why this matters

Creating sections lets you restart page numbering anywhere in your document, perfect for multi-chapter books, reports with appendices, or catalogs with different product categories. You can switch between numbering styles—Roman numerals for your table of contents, then Arabic numbers for the main content.

Sections also enable you to have multiple "page 1s" within a single document, which becomes essential when you're combining different materials or when clients request specific numbering schemes that don't follow a continuous sequence.
