Use this interactive demo to learn how to edit the header in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here is a simple and quick guide on how to add and edit header in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To add or edit a header in Adobe InDesign, open the Pages panel and go to the Master (Parent) Pages.
  2. Go to the left-hand toolbar and select the Type Tool to create a text box above the page margin.‍
  3. Type your text in the text box, and use the Selection Tool to make any necessary adjustments to the frame or the text.

📌 Why this matters

Headers create consistency across multi-page documents like magazines, reports, and books by automatically appearing on every page where the master is applied. You set them up once on the master page, then they propagate throughout your entire document without manual placement on each page.

This becomes invaluable when you're working with lengthy publications or need to make global changes later – updating the header on the master instantly updates it everywhere, saving hours of repetitive work and eliminating the risk of inconsistent formatting across pages.
