Use this interactive demo to learn how to extract the month from the date in Alteryx.
  1. Inside the Alteryx workflow designer, go to the left-side panel and find 'Formula'. Drag this tool onto the canvas and connect it to the Input Data tool or other sources.
  2. Following that, go to the right-side panel and configure the selected tool based on your preference. To get started, enter your preferred Output Column name into the provided input field and choose your desired field type.
  3. Go to the Formula field afterwards, then type 'DateTimeFormat'. Choose it from the suggested results.
  4. Replace DT with '[' and then select the field that contains the data you want to use.
  5. Subsequently, replace F with '%B'. Make sure that it is enclosed inside a pair of quotation marks.
  6. Finally, the month from the dates listed in your Alteryx data will be extracted based on your configurations.

📌 Why this matters

Extracting months from dates lets you group and analyze data by time periods, creating monthly reports, tracking seasonal trends, or calculating period-over-period performance metrics. Beyond basic reporting, this technique becomes particularly powerful when you're working with large datasets spanning multiple years. You can quickly identify patterns like peak sales months, seasonal customer behavior, or cyclical business trends that might be invisible when looking at individual dates. This month-level aggregation also makes your data more digestible for stakeholders who need high-level insights rather than granular daily details.
