‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to fill text with an image using the app’s AI tool or Generative AI in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To fill text with an image using generative AI in Adobe InDesign, first convert your text into an outline by going to 'Type' → 'Create Outlines.'
  2. Once done, convert your outline into a graphic frame by going to 'Object' → 'Content' → 'Graphic.'
  3. Open the 'Text-to-Image' or 'Generative AI' panel from the Window menu.
  4. Type a prompt describing the image or design you want to fill the text with. Then, click 'Generate' to create images.
  5. A dialog box will appear to show the progress of your prompt’s generation.
  6. Once done, with the text still selected, choose a design from the generated images to fill your text. Notice how the text updates as you select different designs.
  7. You have successfully filled your text with an image using the app’s AI tool.

📌 Why this matters

This technique transforms flat typography into dynamic visual elements that grab attention and convey meaning instantly. You can create eye-catching headlines where the text itself tells a story - imagine "OCEAN" filled with actual waves or "FIRE" containing realistic flames.

Beyond aesthetics, this approach solves a common design challenge: making text compete with imagery for visual hierarchy. Instead of choosing between bold typography or compelling visuals, you merge both into a single powerful element that works especially well for posters, magazine covers, and brand campaigns where impact matters most.
