‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to fix rivers in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To fix rivers in a paragraph in Adobe InDesign, first select the paragraph or group of sentences containing the rivers you want to correct.
  2. Open the Paragraph Styles panel from the Window menu.
  3. Once open, double-click the your current style used, or create a new style by clicking the '+' icon at the bottom of the panel.
  4. The Paragraph Style Options window will open. Navigate to the left menu and select 'Hyphenation.'
  5. Enable 'Hyphenate' to add hyphens and adjust words, helping to eliminate any rivers within the highlighted sentences. Click 'OK' to apply changes.‍
  6. Notice how the words and spacing adjust to eliminate the rivers.

📌 Why this matters

Rivers make your text look unprofessional and distract readers from your message. When white space creates vertical channels down your page, it breaks the visual flow and suggests poor attention to detail. Fixing rivers transforms amateur-looking layouts into polished, publication-ready documents that hold readers' attention.

Beyond aesthetics, proper text flow improves readability and comprehension. Professional designers know that seamless typography builds credibility with clients and audiences, making this a crucial skill for anyone creating brochures, reports, or marketing materials.
