Use this interactive demo to learn how to flatten images in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

To flatten images in Adobe InDesign, you can customize Transparency Flattener Presets under the Edit menu. Here are the steps:

‍

  1. To flatten an image in Adobe InDesign, go to 'Edit' → 'Transparency Flattener Presets.'
  2. The Transparency Flattener Preset panel will open. Click ‘New.’
  3. Edit to adjust settings (e.g., set Raster/Vector balance to 100% for high-res output).‍
  4. Apply this preset in the Advancedtab during PDF export.

📌 Why this matters

Flattening images eliminates transparency effects that can cause unpredictable printing results or file corruption when shared across different systems. You gain precise control over how complex layered artwork gets converted into printable elements, preventing those frustrating moments when your carefully designed layout prints with white boxes instead of smooth gradients.

Custom presets let you balance file size against quality - crucial when you're sending files to professional printers who have specific requirements, or when clients need consistent output across multiple vendors and platforms.
