How to Flip Text in Canva

Use this interactive demo to learn how to mirror and flip text in your Canva design.

Quick summary

Canva does not have a dedicated flip text feature, but you can achieve it by adding a heading, exporting it as a transparent PNG, and re-uploading the image to use the built-in Flip tool. This step-by-step workaround lets you create mirrored or flipped text in any Canva design without third-party tools.

Steps

  1. On the edit toolbar, choose 'Text'.
  2. Choose 'Add a heading' to insert the text you want to flip.
  3. Click 'Share' to open the save and export options.
  4. Click 'Download' to begin the export process.
  5. Under file type, select 'PNG'.
  6. Enable the 'Transparent background' option.
  7. Enable the 'Save download settings' option.
  8. Click 'Download' to save the transparent PNG file.
  9. On the edit toolbar, click 'Uploads'.
  10. Choose 'Upload files' to import your downloaded image.
  11. Click the downloaded image to add it to your design canvas.
  12. Move the flipped text to the desired position so it aligns correctly with the original text.
  13. With the uploaded image selected, click 'Flip' on the toolbar above the editor.
  14. Choose 'Flip horizontal' to mirror it sideways, or 'Flip vertical' to flip it upside down.
  15. Your flipped text is now in place — created without a dedicated flip text feature in Canva.

📌 Why this matters

Canva is the go-to graphic design tool for millions of creators, marketers, and small business owners, yet it lacks a native flip text feature. Knowing how to flip or mirror text in Canva unlocks creative design possibilities such as reflection effects, watermarks, and symmetrical typography — all without leaving the platform. This workaround using transparent PNG export and the built-in Flip tool saves users from needing expensive third-party software. Mastering this technique helps Canva users produce more polished, professional-looking visuals faster.
