Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and export an animated GIF from your Canva design.

Quick summary

Canva lets you create a GIF directly from any design by applying photo animations and downloading the result as a GIF file — no third-party tools required. This step-by-step walkthrough covers everything from opening your design to exporting the final animated file to your device.

Steps

  1. Open an existing design in Canva that you want to turn into a GIF.
  2. Click on the photos, shapes, or stickers you want to include in your animated visual content.
  3. Click the Animate button located on the top toolbar.
  4. In the Photo Animations panel, choose your preferred animation style, speed, and direction.
  5. Once satisfied, click the Share button in the top-right corner.
  6. Click the Download button in the share menu.
  7. Under file type, select GIF as the export format.
  8. Canva will generate your GIF and prompt you to download it to your device.

📌 Why this matters

Canva's built-in GIF creation feature lets designers and marketers produce animated visuals without leaving the design tool or relying on external software. By combining photo animations, customizable speed and direction controls, and one-click GIF export, Canva streamlines a workflow that traditionally required multiple steps across different applications. This matters because animated GIFs drive higher engagement on social media, email campaigns, and digital ads compared to static images. For teams already working in Canva, the ability to animate and export GIFs in minutes removes creative friction and accelerates content production.
