Use this interactive demo to learn how to structure a messy Coda doc using subpages.

Quick summary

Organizing a complex Coda doc into subpages makes navigation faster and keeps large documents structured and easy to maintain. This guide walks you through creating, naming, and populating subpages so every section of your doc is clearly separated.

Steps

  1. Open the left-side panel and click the Show Pages icon.
  2. Click the More Options button next to the main page of your doc.
  3. Hover over Add Subpage and select New Page.
  4. Enter a unique subpage name into the provided input field.
  5. Use the floating options above the title to add an icon, cover, or configure other page settings.
  6. Paste the content of the subpage into the entry box below the title.
  7. Review the content format and use the floating toolbar to make any necessary adjustments.
  8. Return to the left-side panel and select the main page.
  9. Confirm that a shortcut to the new subpage has been added to the main page, then repeat these steps for each section of your Coda doc.

📌 Why this matters

Keeping a large Coda doc organized into clearly defined subpages is essential for team productivity and document scalability. When content is broken into individual subpages, users can navigate directly to the section they need without scrolling through a single bloated page. Coda's subpage structure also makes it easier to assign ownership, control visibility, and maintain a clean information hierarchy across complex projects. Teams that adopt this organizational approach spend less time searching for content and more time acting on it.
